Molecules Webinar is very pleased to host Prof. Gaulthier Ridzek and Prof. Junbai Li in the frame of the Special Issue honoring Prof. Katsuhiko Ariga for his outstanding achievements in advancing nanomaterials design and nanoarchitectonics for basic science and applied functional materials.

Nanoarchitectonics was introduced 15 years ago as a new concept that refers to a technology system for arranging nanoscale structural units in a required architecture. In the frame of this concept, Prof. Ariga and his colleagues developed a great deal of new nanocomposites and nanoarchitectures, and multifunctional properties were achieved by a combination of several materials in a well-defined architecture.

After obtaining his PhD degree from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1990, Prof. Ariga worked at the University of Texas at Austin, at Japan’s JST, and at Nara Institute of Technology. Since 2004, he has led the Supermolecules Group at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and served as a principal investigator of the WPI Research Centre for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA). In 2017, he was also appointed as a professor of The University of Tokyo.

His creative and highly collaborative approach to science has led Prof. Ariga to publish over 700 publications to date, numerous books and patents, as well as fostering his worldwide reputation as a preeminent scholar. All this work represents a new class of nanostructured materials that integrate various dissimilar nanoscale building blocks including clusters, particles, wires and films.

In 1998, Fabien Grasset received his Ph.D. degree in solid-state chemistry from the University of Science and Technology of Bordeaux, France, and the Bordeaux Institute of Condensed Matter Chemistry (ICMCB). After a postdoctoral stay at ICMCB on magnetic nanoparticles for nanobiotechnology (group of Professor E. Duguet), he undertook a Postdoctoral Fellowship on functional nanoparticles (ZnO, M@SiO2) at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan from 1999 to 2001 (group of Professors H. Haneda and N. Ohashi). He joined as assistant professor the University of Rennes 1 (UR1), France, in September 2001 and as associate professor since February 2003. He worked on nanomaterials and colloidal chemistry. He joined CNRS in October 2014 as Director of Research and he worked as Director at the IRL3629 LINK CNRS-Saint Gobain-NIMS based at NIMS, Tsukuba, Japan since January 2020. From February 2020, he has been Director of research at ISCR, Rennes, France. He has published around 100 papers. In 2007, he was invited as a Short-Term Fellow of the International Center for Young Scientist (ICYS) at the National Institute for Materials Science under ICYS/NIMS program for 3 months. From 2007 to 2009, he was one of the PI of a MERLION PHC between the National University of Singapore (Professor Y. Zhang) and the UR1. From 2008 to 2012, he was elected at the National Committee of CNRS (section 15). Since 2011, he has been PI on several industrial projects (Solvay, Saint-Gobain, Firadec, Kerdry) and in the ANR’s projects CLUSTOP and ZnO-type-P and currently in DUVNANO and CLIMATE projects.

Katsuhiko Ariga is the Principal Investigator of World Premier International (WPI) Research Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA) at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). He received his Ph.D. Degrees from the Tokyo Institute of Technology. His research field is based on supramolecular chemistry and surface science, including the boundary research areas of organic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, and materials chemistry. He has also been professor of the University of Tokyo since 2017. His H-index is 111 (Web of Science, August, 2021) and he has been selected as a highly cited researcher in both materials science and chemistry. Editorial activities: Editor-in-Chief of Bulletin of Chemical Society of Japan; Executive Advisory Board of Advanced Materials; International Advisory Board of Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Chemistry An Asian Journal, ChemNanoMat; Editorial Board Member of Chemistry of Materials, Langmuir (- 2014), ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Appl. Mater. Today, Small Methods, etc. He is a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry, a Member of World Economic Forum Expert Network and Honorary Member of Materials Research Society of India.

Institut Charles Gerhardt Montpellier, Université de Montpellier, Montpellier, France

Introduction
Bio
Gaulthier Rydzek received his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of Strasbourg in 2012 (Charles Sadron Institute). He then became a JSPS postdoctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Ariga (National Institute for Materials Science, NIMS, Japan) where he investigated electrosynthesized polymeric films. From 2015 to 2018, he was appointed by the International Center of Young Scientists (ICYS-MANA, Japan) to develop his research line on self-assembled hybrid and polymer materials before building a complementary expertise in commercialization/innovation of block-copolymer nanolithography in the frame of an H2020 project (2018-2019, Trinity College, Ireland). In 2019, he joined the University of Montpellier (France) and the Charles Gerhardt Institute (ICGM) as an assistant professor to develop surface architectures combining electrochemistry, polymer and sol-gel sciences. His research activities focus on surface functionalization and self-assembly of (co)polymer and hybrid materials with tailored properties yielding around 30 international peer-reviewed articles and 2 book chapters.

Junbai Li received his Ph.D. degree in Polymer Chemistry and Physics from Jilin University in 1992. He then became a postdoctoral fellow in the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas in 1993 and German Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces from 1994 to 1996. He was then appointed as a full Professor in the Institute of Photographic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) from 1996 to 1999, and then in the Institute of Chemistry, CAS. He has received the "CAS-Program of Hundreds of Talents" in 1997; Award of Hong Kong "Qiu Shi Outstanding Young Scientist" in 2000; NNSFC "Outstanding Young Project" in 1999; 2016 JCIS Darsh Wasan Award; 2017 Lectureship Award of Japanese Chemical Society. He became a foreigner member of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg in 2017; a foreign member of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) in 2019. He has published over 330 peer-reviewed international articles. He has edited 3 books, authored 1 book (Wiley-VCH), and he is the contributor of 8 book chapters and 35 authorized Chinese patents. Prof. Li is currently Editor-in-Chief of Colloids & Surfaces A, Section Editor of Current Opinion in Colloid & Interface Science, Member of the Advisory Boards of several journals. His main research interests are on molecular assembly of lipids, peptides, proteins and enzymes, biointerfaces, and nanostructured design. He has developed the technique of Schiff-based Layer-by-Layer assembly towards biomedical applications and biomaterials. In particular, he has led his group to create new ways to reconstitute motor proteins, ATPase, and Kinesin on an artificially designed cell-like membrane surface. He has worked on various assembled dipeptide structures, in particular well-controlled nanostructures of diphenylalanine, and investigated their photoluminescence properties with formation of quantum-confined structures. He has established the peptide-based photocatalytic and phototherapy systems, and developed various peptide-based biomaterials.

On Friday, 10 September 2021, MDPI and the Journal Molecules organized the 16th webinar on Molecules, entitled " Advances in Nanomaterials Design and Nanoarchitectonics of Functional Materials: A Themed Issue Honoring Professor Katsuhiko Ariga ". This webinar was very successful and clearly demonstrated the key role played by the concept of Nanoarchitectonics in chemistry, biology and physics.

The introduction was held by one of the Chairs of the webinar, Dr. Fabien Grasset, from the University of Rennes in France.

The first speaker to this webinar was Prof. Dr. Gaulthier Ridzek, with an entitled presentation “Electrosynthesis as a Tool for Nanoarchitectonics: Towards Precisely Controlled Interfaces”. He clearly emphasized the importance to develop surface architectures combining electrochemistry, polymers and sol-gel sciences.

The second presentation with the title “Molecular Motor based Nanoarchitectonics: Artificially Assembled Chloroplasts and Mitochondria” was held by Prof. Dr. Junbai Li. In particular, it was unambiguously demonstrated new ways to reconstitute motor proteins, ATPase, and Kinesin on an artificially designed cell-like membrane surface.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chairs Dr. Fabien Grasset and Prof. Dr. Katsuhiko Ariga. Finally, Prof. Dr. Katsuhiko Ariga proceed with the closing of the webinar. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
